I did not have super high expectations going into Finding – Nemo The Musical over at the Animal Kingdom. Largely, this was because when I saw The Beauty and the Beast show at Hollywood Studios I was incredibly disappointed. But Finding Nemo not only met my expectations but exceeded them!
You can tell I was enjoying myself because I didn’t take that many photos, hence why the ones chosen in this post aren’t necessarily the best. But it’s a compliment! I was so distracted I wasn’t thinking about photography.
The puppetry was great. Performers were either dressed to match/ compliment their characters or to blend in with the ocean, and while the focus was on the puppet, sometimes performers utilized their own bodies as part of the movement and it worked really well. Such as Marlin comforting Dory at one moment. The actor positioned the Marlin puppet near Dory but then also reached out and put a hand on puppet Dory’s cheek.
The background puppets were also so cool. I loved the large scale puppets like the sea plants and the jellyfish.
The story was condensed but unlike some other shows (cough BeautyandtheBeast cough), the story line still held together really well.
Overall the show was really good, and reminded me a lot of The Lion King Broadway show in the use of puppets and unusual costumes to portray non human characters. If you’re in Animal Kingdom, definitely take the time to stop and see it!
