Katie Reads: Tuesdays at the Castle

Okay guys, I’m super excited to tell you about this book. Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George:

Tuesdays at Castle Glower are Princess Celie’s favorite days. That’s because on Tuesdays the castle adds a new room, a turret, or sometimes even an entire wing. No one ever knows what the castle will do next, and no one-other than Celie, that is-takes the time to map out the new additions. But when King and Queen Glower are ambushed and their fate is unknown, it’s up to Celie, with her secret knowledge of the castle’s never-ending twists and turns, to protect their home and save their kingdom. This delightful book from a fan- and bookseller-favorite kicks off a brand-new series sure to become a modern classic.

It’s been a while since I’ve been so hooked on a book that I’ve wanted to drop everything else in order to finish it, but that’s what happened with Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George. I started it last night before bed and would have just stayed up late to finish it if I hadn’t had an early morning appointment. As soon as my appointment was done though I rushed home to read.

Tuesdays at the Castle reminds me of all my favorite fantasy books from my childhood – Ella Enchanted, Dealing with Dragons, and a few others. It’s warm and funny, and the sense of magic – a castle that changes when it feels like it – is so wonderfully whimsical. Which is not to say everything in the book is happy go lucky, the danger that Celie and her siblings face protecting their home from a coup is real, but the book maintains its fairy tale quality throughout.I loved the idea of a semi-sentient castle that can alter itself and I loved Celie, she was so fun and spunky! I’m currently so enamored with this book I may even grant it the highest honor: buying a copy to add to my personal library as I originally borrowed a copy to read from the county public library.

And the best news yet: There are sequels!!!

Stay magical readers!
