A week or two ago, I finished reading Jeanne Birdsall’s The Penderwicks, and this week I was happy to start on the sequel – The Penderwicks on Gardam Street.
The Penderwick sisters are home on Gardam Street and ready for an adventure! But the adventure they get isn’t quite what they had in mind. Mr. Penderwick’s sister has decided it’s time for him to start dating—and the girls know that can only mean one thing: disaster. Enter the Save-Daddy Plan—a plot so brilliant, so bold, so funny, that only the Penderwick girls could have come up with it. It’s high jinks, big laughs, and loads of family warmth as the Penderwicks triumphantly return.
I’m always a little wary of sequels because I am usually disappointed, but I had nothing to fear with the Penderwicks. This sequel was just as delightful as the first, and added additional depth to the characters.
The premise of the book is that the widowed Mr. Penderwick has begun dating again – to mixed emotions from his daughters. It’s clear from the beginning of the book who he’ll end up with, but the fun was in the journey, and even though it’s obvious that a certain character is the right match for him, I loved that Birdsall showed the reader how this character was also a good match for the Penderwick sisters without being heavy handed.
While we got a good sense of each of the sisters’ personalities in the first book, we learn so much more about each of them individually and how they fit into their family dynamic. This was helped by the fact that though the main plot of the book was Mr. Penderwick dating, lots of other story lines happen during the book as well so you never feel bogged down by one.
These two books are just pure fun and make me feel like I’m a kid again, and having adventures right alongside the Penderwick sisters. Highly recommended.
Stay magical readers!
