Last week my
roommates parents and I went to see Newsies on tour. I didn’t know much about the show going in, but my college roommate loved the movie so I figured it had to be pretty good.
First, wowza that choreography. The entire cast was full of amazing dancers. They were doing flips and stunts and quadruple pirouettes. At one point one of the dancers did a crazy back flip combination that would give Simone Biles a run for her money. Sometimes extended dance breaks in the middle of songs feel like they drag on, but not so for this show.
The story was light and fun, and very on par with what I would expect for a Disney production. It did have a some sad moments, but everything was tied up very tidily. This would be a fantastic show to do with young actors (provided the licensing group finishes creating Newsies Jr.). Although, given that the cast is 99.9% male, you might need to tweak it so the newBOYS can include newsGIRLS as well. Really, that was my only complaint about the show – there were too few females (the show definitely did not pass the Bechdel test). Does it make sense in the context of the show and the real history that inspired it? Yes. But I’m always an advocate for having more females in casts. That said, the cast was fantastic. All of them had so many energy.
Sometimes touring productions feel a little lackluster (especially if I’ve seen the show on Broadway previously), but that wasn’t a problem for Newsies. I don’t know how much had to be changed to bring the show on tour, but it didn’t feel like any corners had been cut to save costs. The sets were great, and the cast was nice and full.
If you have the chance to see Newsies, I highly recommend it. It was an inspiring and fun night. Plus, you’ll be singing Seize the Day for years.
Stay magical readers!
