Kinky Boots

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to go see Kinky Boots on tour! Going into the show I knew nothing about the plot or the music, but now I’ve been humming the songs since the curtain dropped.

I (like probably some other people) was slightly put off originally by the title. Kinky? What was this musical about??

This musical is about being yourself and how hard that can be, accepting others for who they are, and beautiful shoes. It’s such a positive show that it’s unfortunate that some people are probably put off by the title or the inclusion of drag queens. The story revolves around Charlie Price, the fourth generation “son” of Price and Son Shoes. After his father’s death, Charlie must save his family’s failing factory. After meeting the oh so fabulous drag queen Lola, Charlie and Lola team up to design high heeled boots that are strong enough to be worn by drag queen performers. There are some obvious bumps along the road.

At first I was shocked by the number of people who had brought their young children with them. After seeing the show though, aside from one song and some racier comments/ jokes, the show is pretty family friendly. The message is certainly great for anyone of any age – it can be hard to figure out who you are, and once you do not everyone is always going to support you, but that’s okay.

I can’t think of a single thing I didn’t like about this show. The cast had so much energy and the audience really gets to feel like part of the factory family. Charlie and Lola’s struggles compliment each other really well, and you really feel for both of them. The music was addicting, and the dancing was phenomenal. Shout out to the costume designer because the drag queen costumes were not only amazing, but all the factory workers costumes, while much more subtle, really gave you a sense of their characters.

Basically, if you have the chance to see it – GO DO IT.

Stay magical readers!
