During my time working for Disney I wanted so badly for the company to add character dining that involved Rapunzel. They did not. Flash forward to a couple months ago. Disney announced that they would be offering a new dining option where you could meet Flynn and Rapunzel, and Eric and Ariel. The Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast at Trattoria al Forno! It immediately shot to the top of my must try at Disney list. Reservations are very hard to come by though, so I didn’t expect that it would happen any time soon.
Right before our most recent trip to Disney, my mum surprised me: she had managed to get a reservation! For 7:30 am. Yes, I willingly agreed to get up before sunrise on vacation. That should tell you how excited I was.
We were staying at the Coronado Hotel, and the Bon Voyage Adventure breakfast is at the Boardwalk. Disney doesn’t run buses between their hotels. If it had been during park hours, we could have taken a bus to Epcot and then walked through the International Gateway to the Boardwalk. However, it was 7:30 so we had to catch a taxi.
We were one of the first groups to be seated for the morning, and the staff had a fun opening tradition – they all lined up and created a tunnel for us to walk through by lifting little frying pans. I was so excited I didn’t think to get a picture of this. I also forgot to take a picture of the very cute travel journal that was at each table. We were supposed to use them to “record our adventures”.
Our meal started with a frying pan full of small pastries. I started with the crisp pastry shaped like the Corona sun. My mum and I split the clam shell shaped cherry turnover, and the chocolate croissant. The frying pan assortment was rounded out with two muffins. I really liked everything, and my mum’s favorite was the chocolate croissant.
Each meal came with a mini appetizer – a fruit salad, or a yogurt parfait with berries, honey, and granola. My yogurt came with a small crab cookie and my mum’s salad came with a crown cookie and a little sword! I know it was just yogurt, but the honey and granola made it amazing.
For my entree, I ordered the pancakes. The pancakes were fluffy, and they were generous with the berries. Yum.
But that wasn’t the best part.
Oh yeah. That’s Flynn Rider aka Eugene Fitzherbert! Even though I spent a lot of time with Rapunzel, we never got to hang out with Eugene. So at this breakfast I spent a lot of time giggling and not forming complete sentences. It was magical.
Normally character dining is mostly fun for the characters, and don’t get me wrong, I love Rapunzel, Eugene, Eric, and Ariel. But the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast was a notch above the other character dining I’ve done just because of the menu. The food was excellent! I would have been happy with the breakfast even if there hadn’t been characters. But the fact that Eugene was there too made this my favorite character dining option so far!
